I would not recommend this documentary to long-time anime fans. I only recommend the film if you are new to anime, interested in getting into it, or doing an academic study of the genre and the culture surrounding it. This documentary explores questions such as "what is an Otaku?," "what was it like being an anime fan in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, as compared to now?," "How did anime become popular in the United States?" So if you are a long-time anime fan like myself, most of the documentary will bore you to sleep. The only part of the film that I found interesting was the small amount of anime convention coverage during the film.

Not much of interest in this doc. I can wrap up the movie in about 3 lines. Otaku is a bad word in Japan, anime was hard to get ahold of back in the day, but now theres conventions and people dress up. Done. I just saved you 70 boobless minutes. haha. But seriously, this doc just describes how anime fandom went from your friends basement with a 5th generation bootleg from Japan, to what it is today with Toonami, Virgin Megastore, and large conventions from the point of view from the old anime fans who are bitter about its newfound acceptance in pop culture. There are no specific references to any shows other than Robotech, or any in depth coverage of any conventions. I love anime, but I found myself looking at my watch more than once during this doc. The only thing remotely interesting was the cosplay gallary in the dvd extras.

I am not a cosplayer but I date one. I found this movie to be painful to watch in an embarrassing kind of way. They seemed to find a bunch of cosplayers and anime fans that lack the social skills that many regular folks seem to have. For people on the outside this movie will just add more to already large pile of things that people joke about when it comes to anime. For those who know things about anime this movie will make you cover your face and be ashamed that your 6’6 firefighter uncle walked in on it and have it be his only source of anime fan activities. If you are an anime fan watch it just so you can talk about it. If you know nothing about anime watch it so you can feel a little twinge of rage about how goofy these people are.
