Grudge director Takeshi Shimizu returns to tell this tale of a film crew that descends upon a hotel that was once the scene of a vicious killing spree, only to find that the horrors of the past have a malevolent means of manifesting themselves in the present. Years after a professor slaughtered his wife, his young daughter, and nine hotel guests at the Ono Kanko just north of Tokyo, horror filmmaker Ikuo Matsumara (Kippei Shiina) and his crew prepare to make a movie about the murders. As pre-production on the film gets underway, the lead actress experiences a vivid vision of the murders and is shocked to awaken in the very room where the body of the professor's daughter was discovered. In her vision, the actress watched helplessly as the professor sadistically captures the final moments of his victims on film. When the actress finds the very same camera she saw the professor using in her vision and the cast members begin dying in the same manner as their real-life counterparts, it begins to appear as if the mad professor has returned from beyond the grave to ensure that his dark story never makes it to the silver screen. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

I watched this movie through in one sitting (albeit with a few brief interruptions) and with the exception of a few startling moments, I found this movie to be ok. Not great, not horrible. Just ok. I'm glad they didn't go with that non-linear story telling that Takashi Shimizu is notorious for, so from that stand-point, the story is fairly easy to follow. Rather prolonged and lacklaster most of the time. As I said, it wasn't horrible. But I can't really say I'd recommend it though either. Was there anything about it that (as the ads claim) to be too controversial or graphic for theaters...? Hardly. At least in the case of this movie. No, this movie could've played in the theaters. Maybe just a marketing ploy to intrigue audiences.

If you like blood and gore then this is not for your. I thought of it as more mystery than horror. You do have to think a little more then you would with an American horror film. If you don't like subtitles then don't rent. Wait for Hollywood to ruin another Japanese film. I had no problems watching and reading the subtitles at the same time. I usually don't like watching foreign films and hearing American voices. I was pleasantly surprised to see Oguri Shun in here. It wouldn't have been the same seeing him talk and hearing an American voice come out.

I may have underated this movie, as I had to struggle through an entire movie of subtitles, just hate that. The movie was pretty good for a horror flick. I think I might have really gotten into it if it had been dubbed in english.
