Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Teatro Real Madrid) (2005)
Member Rating:
Emilio Sagi's unusual stage production of Rossini's opera The Barber of Seville unearths the comic aspects of the original work and opts for flashy set design, full of blindingly bright pop color and a circus-like atmosphere, and interpreted by an all-Hispanic cast. The story remains essentially unchanged: Count Almaviva - set on wooing the stunning Rosina - receives assistance from the title character, also known as Figaro. The barber helps Almaviva pull Rosina away from her guardian, Dr. Bartolo. Juan Diego Florez stars as Almaviva, Maria Bayo as Rosina, and Pietro Spagnoli as Figaro. The Teatro Real de Madrid and The Teatro Sao Carlos de Lisboa co-produced. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

A very creative production. Imaginative sets, excellent voices, On the second disc the background discussions of the mise en scene, character development, the singers, and interviews were also very helpful.

This lovely, vivid, somewhat abstract production is well performed. All in all, it is a fanciful, exuberant romp.

Interesting and unique exchange of sets. Wonderful performance by Juan Diego Florez. Nonsensical staging in the early interior scenes with singing while sitting on or under tables, strange entrances through windows and more silliness. Not one of my favorite productions of this opera.
