Since there is no review yet, I'll weigh in, even though I've only received Symphony No. 3. I've seen Symphonies 7 & 8 in this series and liked them very much, especially the 8th--stunning not only for the sheer spectacle but because the Vienna Philharmonic played beautifully and Bernstein owned it. I will update this review once I've received the other disc in the set. The 3rd is utterly average. The Vienna Philharmonic was inconsistent in those days, and here they are at their worst. The playing is rough throughout, especially from the brass, but also out-of-tune winds and sloppy strings. Bernstein puts on a good show, but doesn't have the measure of the Third, so the performance never feels cohesive. This was a disappointment, given this series' reputation. Try Claudio Abbado's DVDs with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and the excellent releases from the Berlin Philharmonic with Simon Rattle.
