In 1970, a music aficionado and entrepreneur named Michael Eavis staged a "pop, folk, and blues" festival on a dairy farm in the English community of Glastonbury, not far from Stonehenge. 1,500 attended the "Glastonbury Fayre," and a second festival followed in 1971. By 2005, The Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts had grown into the biggest pop music festival in the world, playing host to the biggest names in rock, reggae, electronic, blues, and world music for a crowd of up to 150,000 people over the course of a three-day weekend in June. Filmmaker Julien Temple offers a backstage look at the history of this event, as well as a cross section of the memorable performances which have taken place on the festival's stage in the documentary Glastonbury. Performers featured in archival footage include R.E.M., David Bowie, New Order, Radiohead, Coldplay, the Velvet Underground, Nick Cave, Oasis, Blur, Björk, and many more. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The 1st disc was very disappointing. So many amazing artists have played Glastonbury but we get only occasional 30 second clips of a small subset of them. It mostly spotlights the fringe elements of people who talking about the festival and showing random clips of the fringe element of wastoids who attend the festival. Hours of people acting stupid but almost zero musical inspiration. Should be more appropriately titled "Freak sideshows at Glastonbury". There are a few full-song performances on the 2nd disc, which is all that will be worth your time.

I rented this DVD to see and hear the reported great musical performances at this festival over the 35 years that it has been going on. Unfortunately, you get very little music (no full songs just snippets), just a lot of crowd scenes. It was interesting to see all of the freaks for the 1st fifteen minutes or so, but after that, I was left thinking "so what". I admit that I was so disappointed with the 1st disc that I didn't bother to watch the 2nd.

Grainy, choppy, fluttering video, with incoherent British accents & a lot of hippies in a Woodstock setting, like it mattered or something. A bunch of video fragments slapped together into a DVD.
