Oddly compelling, somewhat well acted, well shot, (for those who like cleverly composed scenes and unique editing), very erotic (though not nearly as explicit as other exploitative horror of the time), and generally watchable. Certainly "artsy," and hard to "connect with"; Bell from Hell will quickly turn away anyone who goes in with any preconceived expectations or doesn't watch it with an open mind. Recommended for fans of the period/genre only.

This movie is surreal and will only appeal to a certain fringe group. The lead male plans to use his claimed mental status as an excuse for seeking revenge on the women who had him confined in an assylum and who continue to control him. To what degree is this lead man mentally ill and to what degree is he exploiting his status - these questions get answered differently depending on how you interpret what is depicted on film. There are issues of language and sexuality as well as parallels between humans and how cows are slaughtered to produce the meat we eat. Final twists in the plot make you ask whether the bell has finally tolled on the lead man.
