Don Carlos

Don Carlos ()
Member Rating:
Just prior to his death in 1976, the late cinematic genius Luchino Visconti (The Damned, La Terra trema, Il Leopardo) mounted this production of the opera Don Carlo at The Royal Opera House, with a cast that includes the tenor Luis Lima in the title role, Romayne Grigorova as The Countess of Aremburg, Ileana Cotrubas as Elizabetta di Valois and John Dobson as Count Lerma. The Royal Opera Chorus and The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House provide musical accompaniment. Using Schiller's Don Carlos as their source material, F.J. Méry and C. Du Locle adapted the libretto for this work, set in the sixteenth century, which tells the story of the competition - on political and romantic levels - that cropped up between King Philip II of Spain and his heir, the venerable Don Carlo. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

This 35 year old production holds up pretty well. Haitnik conducts with his usual grace and intelligence, while the principals all provide worthy performances.
