A trio of French teens experiences a love that will change their lives forever in this erotic coming-of-age tale from director Anthony Cordier. Mickael's (Johan Libereau) obsession with Judo often helps him to focus his frustrations in life, but when he's alone with longtime girlfriend, Vanessa (Salomée Stevenin), his guard fades, leaving a loving and easygoing boyfriend where the aggressive martial artist used to be. Clément (Pierre Perrier) is the new kid in town with a similar obsession with Judo and a pair of nouveau riche parents who stand in stark contrast to Mickael's working class mother and father. When the pair bond over an upcoming tournament and Clément helps Mickael to lose some weight for the meet, Vanessa is hesitant to accept the outspoken newcomer. As the bond between Mickael and Clément strengthens, Vanessa's increasingly complex role in the pair's friendship leads the trio through a series of sacrifices and emotional revelations that will result in a profoundly affecting sexual encounter for all three conflicted teens. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

COLD SHOWERS introduces a new French filmmaker--Antony Cordier--whose grasp on character and how it evolves via parents, peers, place and class is already quite promising. This story of a working-class youth, his girlfriend and the well-to-do classmate they befriend presents a fairly rich tapestry of social and sexual mores, including one of the hottest sex scenes I have witnessed, which is capped by a somehow even hotter, post-coital shower scene (unless this rental service does some of its usual "trimming"). The lead character--and unfortunately the movie itself--never quite recovers from this mid-point "event," but as it winds down, the film appears to be saying that (1) the female is innately able to handle friendship, sexual attraction and their cross-over more easily than the male and (2) a male with money and position negotiates all this better than one without. I'd agree, though I'd like to have seen Cordier force his characters into a bit more self-awareness & communication.

To be quite honest, I would have enjoyed the film even if were only to watch then-20-year-old Johan Libereau shirtless or naked throughout most of the movie (yes, there is even full frontal nudity). Yet the movie is also well written, acted, and edited. It is interesting enough as a dysfunctional family drama, a coming-of-age movie, and a flick about friendship across social classes. Although it's not exactly the most brilliant movie I've ever seen, I really enjoyed watching this one, and might even buy it for my collection.

This was your usual supposed to be gay movie with the "thrown in" female that is supposed to spice up everything and make things more interesting. I have yet to see a couple of guys interested in each other that are satisfied to throw in some female to make the relationship stronger.
