The Moustache (2005)
Member Rating:
"What would you think if I shaved my moustache?" asks Marc (Vincent Lindon) of his wife, Agnès (Emmanuelle Devos), one fateful night as they prepare to visit friends for dinner. She's never seen him without it, but while she goes to do some last-minute shopping, he impulsively shaves the moustache off. Thus begins a tragic odyssey that leads Marc to question every relationship in his life, and even his own identity. Marc's journey into darkness begins when Agnès returns home. At first, he playfully tries to conceal what he's done. When he finally reveals his bare face to her, with a flourish, her reaction is...nonexistent. She baffles him by appearing not to notice the change. Confused, he says nothing, and they proceed with their plans for the evening. When the couple's friends Serge (Mathieu Amalric) and Nadia (Macha Polikarpova) also fail to make note of the change in Marc's appearance, he begins to get angry, believing that Agnès is playing an elaborate prank on him. In the car on the way home, he loses his temper, and it's her turn to be baffled. What moustache? How can she have noticed that he shaved his moustache when he's never had one? While Agnès begins to question her husband's sanity, Marc frantically searches for evidence of his former facial hair. Things only get worse for Marc, as no one at his job remembers him having a moustache either, and before long, he discovers that there are other details of his life that only he remembers. The Moustache marks the directorial debut of Emmanuel Carrère, who adapted his own novel with Jérôme Beaujour (She's One of Us). The film was shown as part of The Film Society of Lincoln Center's 2006 Rendez-Vous with French Cinema. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

This movie, intriguing from the start got more and more bizarre as it progressed. As the film neared its end, we were wondering how it was going to work out? When the film faded to noir, we all shouted "How can it end now? What happened?" I went on line to see if there were reviews explaining what the film was all about. One writer was as upset as we were, talking about the most disappointing disatisfying ending ever. I did find one review that said the moustache was metaphorical about the problems between the couple and how they were visible to some and not to others, a rather feeble excuse for the length of that movie. However, if you feel more intelligent after watching a French film, and enjoy seeing some different scenery and household appliances, this movie is for you. I still just wish I knew what it was all about........

"La Moustache" is enigmatic in the extreme. Even Emmanuel Carrere, the author of the book, who is equally the playwright and director of the film, admits that he does not understand what is happening to Marc. Carrere is as much in the dark as are the reader, the viewer, and Marc, himself. Personally, I enjoyed the enigmatic quality of the film. We are left to wonder if it is a story of madness and, if so, whose madness -- that of Marc or Agnes? Or is it, instead, a story of complicity? Or of metaphorical science fiction? Is it possible that this film simply does not make sense (except in a lovely artistic way, of course)? "La Moustache" is beautifully directed by Carrere and brilliantly acted by Vincent Lindon in the lead role. It is an intelligent, suspenseful and romantic film, with wonderful chemistry between Vincent Lindon and Emmanuelle Devos, as Marc's wife. If you allow yourself not to look for pat answers, you may find yourself completely mesmerized, as I was.

My interpretation: At the start of the movie "Marc" asks his wife what she would think if he shaved off his mustache. She replies (in short) that it was a part of his identity. So when he shaves off his mustache, he loses his identity and desperately tries in many different places to get it back. He flees to Hong Kong for what he thought would be a short while and writes a postcard that says he doesn't see anything without her eyes. (paraphrasing). Once he has been gone long enough, he regains his lost identity (grows his mustache back) and his wife and friends see him as they had before. At the film's conclusion, he shaves his mustache again, but the difference is that it was at her request. Let me know if I'm way off base. I wish there had been director commentary on the DVD.
