Sure, the Don in Hanes briefs is stretching it (no pun intended) but the South Bronx setting brings to life all the same issues that were prevalent back in the late 1700s. In the end you can just close your eyes and listen. Ultimately it's all about Mozart at his peak. Hunt, Labelle, and the Perry brothers are electrifying in portraying the dramatic tension with their beautiful singing and superb musicianship. Craig Smith as conductor always allows the music to breathe yet at the same time pushes it to the edge when the excitement calls for it.

Not your father's Don Giovanni, this version really pushes the envelope. If you're a traditionalist- don't rent this. But if you admire creativity, give it a look. Its powerful & gritty although some scenes are over the top. Especially noteworthy is the relationship between Don Giovanni (Eugene Perry) and Leporello (Herbert Perry)- real life brothers with great voices.

I LOVE Don Giovanni, but this particular version's idea of gangs and violence doesn't capture the comedy as well as the 18th century version.
