Macross [Anime Series] (1982)
Member Rating:
This series is the first in the mammoth library of series, movies, and OVAs known as "Macross." In Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, otherwise known as SDF-1 Macross, the people of Earth, living for the first time under one government for all humanity, have spent the past ten years rebuilding the city-sized alien spaceship that crashed on South Atalia Island. Finally ready to celebrate the ship's first launch, the inexperienced pilots of the ship are met with an attack from an alien race called the Zentradi. The Zentradi are fierce enemies of the race that originally piloted the ship that crashed to Earth, and seeing it now, begin to fire. Earth has unwittingly entered into a war with an alien race, thus changing the history of the universe for all time. SDF-1 Macross was edited, dubbed, and combined with the series Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada to create the American series Robotech: Macross Saga. Robotech is sometimes mistakenly described as simply the English dub of SDF-1 Macross, but this is not the case. ~ Cammila Collar, Rovi

I am a sucker for the Macross anything. I liked the redubbing which was very very close to the Japanese dialogue. The new voices took a little bit to get used to, but they did a good job. I thought it was kind of funny that Minmei had an accent, but no one else did. If you havent seen this version but know you like Robotech or any of the other Macross movies or series or just giant robots or even an action filled light romance then you should watch this. Worth seeing.

Though it has not held up all that well over the years - dialog could be better, stereotypes galore - it is still entertaining, a bit deeper than its contemporaries, and it brings back memories of a time nearly forgotten when I first watched this. Plus, it's the first time seeing the un-edited original, and it is better than the version run on US TV.

My first exposure to Macross was by the brilliant film Macross Plus. It's pretty much Anime perfection for me. So I figured I'd check out the original Macross series to see if it was similar at all. It's not. These shows were aweful. I understand it's from the 80s so it's going to be a little dated, but my goodness the dialogue and characters are just terrible. I'm going to hang with it for a few more volumes to see if they improve. But if you're looking for a smart, quality anime go elsewhere.
