This movie really kept me guessing. It is a touch on the violent side, though. But I felt a great mystery. I really can't see why someone wouldn't like this film that likes this genre. Strong female character, keeps you guessing. Well-acted. Dark, spooky and frightening. Gave me nightmares! Enjoy!

A glossy, big-budget slightly-futuristic actioner-cum-fantasy, EMPIRE OF THE WOLVES is the kind of French film that we don’t see much of over here in the US. Unlike "Brotherhood of the Wolf" (but similar to "The Nest"), this one never received a theatrical release, so those who discover it on DVD are in for some fun. The first half is simply fabulous as the mystery deepens; once it begins being explained (as is so often the case) some of the magic dissipates. There's enough left, however, to see you through to the hum-dinger ending. The cast, led by Jean Reno (looking as old and dissolute as I've seen him) is quite good and makes use of mostly new faces (to the US, at least). Leading lady Arly Jover (from the original "Blade" and "Everything Put Together") is striking and--unless they used a stunt double--has some terrific moves. This one's enjoyable and different.
