A twelve year old boy embarks on a journey that will forever shape the way he views his urban surroundings in this thought-provoking coming of age drama from first-time feature filmmaker Aaron Greer. Rolanda and Daryl are a working class couple doing their best to raise their young son Eric while earning a living and caring for Rolanda's ailing mother. Darryl drives a bus on second shift, and the very pregnant Rolanda hasn't been feeling well as of late. Upon realizing that she has forgotten to fill the prescription for her mother's new diabetes medicine, Rolanda realizes that the only person able to make it to the store before closing time is young Eric. Desperate, Rolanda gives her son the prescription, her credit card, and $22 to pick up the medicine. But the streets are fast growing dark, and the city at nighttime is no place for a young boy. Now, what should have been a simple journey suddenly becomes hopelessly complicated, forcing a young boy to make decisions that seem logical at the time, but ultimately lead him into danger. Meanwhile, back home, a worried mother begins to regret her decision to send her young son into the night in order to carry out a task that would be better suited to a responsible adult. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This was as close to real life as a movie can get. It's about a young African American boy in his hometown trying not to get caught up in all of the bad things that happen in his neighborhood. At the core, it's about learning how to make good decisions. This film has a serious tone. All in all, "Gettin' Grown" is a wonderful film with a very much needed message of making good decisions and triumphing over the bad aspects of your environment. - Anthony Fitzgerald

Great film! This is a realistic coming-of-age story, and while it's set in the inner city, it has universal messages. Every parent has to face the issues of how to help kids develop responsibility and when to let go and trust them. Every kid faces temptations and times when his/her judgment is not up to the challenge. There is much for a family to talk about after seeing this movie, which can comfortably be viewed by Christian families and other families for whom obscenity, sex and violence-free entertainment is important.

I rented Gettin' Grown and absolutely loved it. The nuanced way the producers and director approach a film set in an urban American setting was extremely refreshing. They seemingly set out to break every formula Hollywood follows when creating urban dramas. I find it important for youth to see themselves in media in ways they can relate. Gettin' Grown provides this opportunity. The film speaks to the intellect that every child has and deserves an opportunity to nurture. I am going to tell all my friends and family about this great and necessary film. I only hope that a story like this will prove that these types of stories can be successful and need to be told.
