U-Carmen (2005)
Member Rating:
Bizet's Carmen gets a cultural transplant as director Mark Dornford-May transports the events of the tragic opera to South Africa in this musical concerning a seductive cigarette-factory worker and her attempts to romance a policeman already set to marry another woman. Originally mounted on-stage by the innovative Dornford-May, this version of Carmen reworks Bizet's familiar tunes by adopting them into Xhosa to tell the tale of Carmen's doomed affair with otherwise involved policeman Jongikhaya (Andile Tshoni). ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Singing wasn't the greatest, though the idea was sweet...and innovative. Couldn't get past the first half hour or so.

This took me back to when we appreciated the full package of womanhood. If your idea of sexy is an anorexic model, surgically and cosmetically enhanced, you may not be able to handle this woman. What I glimpsed among the cigarette factory crew were women that celebrated life with the bittersweet attitude of pain, anger and "using what they had to get what they want." Then the men desperately watched not knowing what to do to lift up their women. It will evoke a certain nostalgia for those who have felt this, because who feels it knows it.

Didn't see the point in doing a Carmen opera set in this location. Story line a little slow. Music was very good. However the worst part was Carmen was not attractful and didn't look the part. Was hard to buy in that she could mesmerize men.
