I watched this film to see what is being shown in these videos. In order to really gain an understanding of Salsa, you would need to know the basic steps first. I think because there are no back views of the feet in this movie, it would be difficult for a novice. It also cause a little confusion for the steps of merengue (simple as they may be) for a novice as well. One good point: the information on the origin of various latin dances in the Extras and the range of dance basic she demonstrates, (mambo, merengue, salsa, rhumba, charanga) into one dance. You repeat in what she titles a warm up. Can you learn more in another video?? Of course, but would you learn as many basics to different styles of dance, probably not. Also, akin to the American Electric Slide, there is a line dance shown at the end of the video. Try to work through the frustration and master what she demonstrates. If you do, it will serve you well.

The quality of the video is very bad. The sound is very bad as well. And the voice over that explains the steps is off. The lessons are not well explained at all. I tried to follow along but I got tired of doing warm ups. Even If you have some some idea of salsa steps you will probably will end up getting confused. I know I did.

The instructor starts off with a "warmup" which is a group of people dancing the dances they are supposed to teach. This lasts a long time. What are we supposed to do during all this? Then she spends 30 seconds showing 4 basic steps at full speed, with no breakdown or explanation of men vs. women. Worse, she is facing you and she isn't "mirrored" so when she moves her left foot, and you move your left foot, it is in the opposite direction. As if this isn't confusing enough, she then goes to the next dance. 5 dances go by like this, as if we are somehow going to remember them all, and then she goes into partner dancing with all the 5 dances, again at full speed with no explanation or breakdown. And that's about it. Don't waste your time.
