Filmmaker Werner Herzog adds another real-life character to his growing pantheon of people who walk a fine line between visionary genius and madness in this documentary. Timothy Treadwell was a self-styled authority on bears who, starting in 1990, would spend as much time as possible each year in Alaska, camping out near a grizzly bear habitat. While Treadwell claimed to love the bears and felt as one with them, he had no formal training in their behavior, and while familiarizing himself with the creatures he would walk within a few feet of them with a video camera in hand. To many, Treadwell seemed part man of nature, part conjuror, and part self-promotion expert, but the part that guided his kinship with the bears failed him in 2003, when he and his girlfriend were killed in a grizzly attack. Treadwell shot hundreds of hours of footage of himself and the grizzlies, and Herzog has used this footage as the core of Grizzly Man, a documentary look at Treadwell's life and death, while also including interviews with people who knew him, animal experts, and scientists. Acclaimed British guitarist Richard Thompson composed and performed the film's musical score. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

From the reviews, it is readily apparent that many of the viewers did not understand the purpose of the movie. The movie was not about the bears at all. The movie was a portrait of Timothy Treadwell and his strange obsession with grizzly bears. The scenes he choose to film said more about Timothy than anything about the bears. He did become one with the bears and survived for 12 years until he attempted to introduce another human into the equation. The movie says a lot about human nature and our modern disaffection with nature.

Still a good overall movie and very entertaining. However, this guy Treadwell is seriously insane. Not just because he lived out with grizzlies, but because he has absolutely no self-esteem, and really doesn't truly love himself. He at times acts like a paranoidd schizoprenic. It is obvious that he used to be adicted to drugs and alcohol and now he is addicted to bears and the wild. He really isn't able to connect with real human beings.

There could have been many ways to go with this story of Timothy Treadwell who was a naturalist that lived with bears the last 13 summers of his life, and most of those ways would have been the wrong way. Finding a right way took the brilliance of director Warren Herzog. Treadwell was a troubled man to say the very least. Herzog uses Treadwell's own footage which IS quite beautiful, but the film isn't an enviromental film, it's a character study of Treadwell himself and one of the best I've seen. I must also mention the beautiful soundtrack to this film and I highly recommend watching the special features on the session of the making of the soundtrack - I enjoyed that almost as much as the movie itself.
