Actor Jordi Mollà made his directorial debut with this satiric drama, which casts a jaundiced eye on the world of television. Salva (Mollà) and his best friend, Angel (Juan Carlos Vellido), are a pair of homeless men who scrape together a living begging in a train station. After the men are implicated in the killing of a priest, Salva and Angel are put behind bars, where they are spotted by the producer of "Harsh Treatment," a reality television show in which the viewing audience is asked to judge if the contestants are innocent or guilty of the crimes of which they are accused. With his long hair and kind eyes, Salva looks a bit like Jesus, and Bigardo (Daniel Giménez Cacho), the creator of the show, decided to play the resemblance for all it's worth; the home audience not only acquits Salva, but he's given a new job as a TV preacher. Disillusioned, Angel goes back to the gutter, while Salva, who is uncertainly navigating the ladder of success, becomes deeply infatuated with Espe (Candela Peña), Bigardo's significant other. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Somewhere between Monty Python's 'Life of Brian' and the Book of Revelations by St. John the Divine lies 'God is on the Air' ('No Somos Nadie' in the original). The film uses over the top scene-setting montages and heavily symbolic character traits to frame this send-up of reality television and public relations huckstering into an apocalyptic set-up of a false messiah who only wants to 'keep it real'. Church hypocrisy and piety with a weather eye on donations is lambasted heavily, but the satire falls largely and magnificently on the half-hell of the television ratings game. At the end of the film, we find ourselves wondering just what a miracle or a messiah (new or false) could possibly mean in this heavily commercialized era, and asks where would the Anti-Christ be without a good PR front. An excellent film that displays an irreverent piety that will have you in stitches even as you wonder if they really said that.

Using the imagery of an all-too-plausible dystopian future, this movie's depiction of the rise of an accidental messiah offers biting criticism and insightful satire in an all-too-plausible world dominated by reality TV and the ratings war. Salva and his friend Angel are a pair of homeless beggars whose territory is hte local train station. In an effort to increase their earnings, they decide to turn to preaching. Unfortunately, on their way to piety, they accidentally kill a local priest. Salva then finds himself on a popular tv show where, if found guilty, he will be killed on live tv. When found innocent and catapulted to stardom, Salva finds that the life of a reluctant savior is riddled with difficult choices. The imagery and and characterization can be heavy-handed at times (pun intended) but that is what makes this film an effective satire. This is a hard-to-find gem worth multiple viewings.
