Filmmaker Terry Zwigoff and comic artist and screenwriter Daniel Clowes, who collaborated for the acclaimed 2001 comedy-drama Ghost World, team up once again for this offbeat satire. Jerome (Max Minghella) is an aspiring artist who arrives at a prestigious East Coast art institute to study. While Jerome enjoys daydreams of becoming the best-respected painter on Earth and winning the hearts of his female classmates, he soon learns the sad truth -- his "cool artist" act is old hat in the big city, and as he's surrounded by every art school cliché on Earth, practically nothing about him stands out. Determined to be recognized whatever the consequences, Jerome maps out a bizarre plan to become famous that has some unexpected consequences. Loosely adapted from a story in Clowes' comic book Eightball, Art School Confidential also stars John Malkovich, Jim Broadbent, Anjelica Huston, and Sophia Myles. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Only truly funny since I was an art major... not sure if anyone else would find it amusing. This movie showed the rest of the world how rediculous and uppity the art world really can be. Odd situations, good one liners.

Any artist who rates this highly must be full of self-loathing. Stereotypical theme implies that Art=BS and a lust for fame is the main factor in creative life - hardly a new take! Every last inmate in this asylum is standard issue nut job. Maybe I went to a better art school, but where are the INTERESTING weirdos - the guy who only painted trains (and could get you as excited about them as he was!) Where are the amazing women? And sure there were no-talent blowhards, but a couple of my teachers were among the wisest, most intuitive people I ever knew. This movie takes the easy out at every opportunity, turning what could have been an unusual subject into a cliched, mediocre mess. It does have Malkovich, even if he's wasted - the only reason it gets one star.

It was cute, more of a satire than funny, especially enjoyable if you enjoy the making fun of art and artist. As they say, art is in the eye of the beholder and if you think it is art than art is what it must be. Kind of like watching those people on American Idol that can not sing but they think they can.. Seeing people who think they know art and are artist making fools of themselves. It is on the dark side so do not expect a funny happy ending.
