Kevin Bacon narrates this documentary (produced by the National Geographic Society) which examines the elemental power of earthquakes, tornadoes, and volcanoes. Combining striking archive footage with computer-created reenactments and interviews explaining just what causes these natural forces to lose control, the film's sequence on volcanoes is centered on the massive Soufriere Hills eruption of 1995, while an tremor in Izmit, Turkey, which cost the lives of 17,000 sets the stage for a segment on earthquakes, and Dr. Joshua Wurman leads a group of "storm chasers" as the filmmakers investigate tornadoes. It is good but it is short.

The people who filmed this put an incredible effort (years) into their pieces. The footage of volcanoes erupting, tornados being created and hurricane devastation are incredible. It gives you a new appreciation for the power of these forces. The information is aimed at intelligent viewers but not at people who are well informed on the subjects. Those people will appreciate the footage more than the scientific knowledge. Both the adults and the kids in my family enjoyed Forces of Nature and it is nice to have a short piece to watch on the occassional a school night. Since this is filmed in IMAX, the image quality is excellent. We did not experience any problems with uneven sound over our stereo as did the previous reviewer.

As usual, national geographic provides wonderful images and visual effects. However, I just can't understand why their sound mixing is so out of whack. The narration was barely audible, and when I turned up the volume to hear it, I got blasted with music and other sounds. The bad audio mixing, along with the incredibly short run time, completely ruined the movie for me.
