9 Songs (2004)
Member Rating:
A relationship between a British scientist and an American student is chronicled through the concerts they saw and the love they made in this highly personal romantic drama from director Michael Winterbottom. Matt (Kieran O'Brien) works with the British Antarctic Survey team, and as he travels to the South Pole and ponders the vast plains of snow and ice, his mind drifts back to his short-lived romance with Lisa (Margo Stilley), a free-spirited girl from the United States. Matt and Lisa met at a rock concert, and afterward the two went back to his flat and made love; as Matt relives their relationship in his mind, their time together is reduced to a few meals, bits of conversation, and nine concerts they attended together, punctuated by their sessions in the bedroom. Described by several critics as the most sexually explicit film produced to date by a noted international director, 9 Songs was a labor of love for Michael Winterbottom. Primarily improvised, self-financed, and shot using digital video equipment with a three-person skeleton crew, 9 Songs includes performances by Primal Scream, the Von Bondies, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Franz Ferdinand, Super Furry Animals, the Dandy Warhols, Elbow, and Michael Nyman. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Warning this is the censored version of the film. Even though the DVD is labeled "Director's Cut" and is rated NR, this is a cut version of the film. I'm sorry I wasted my time.

I have an aversion to anyone deciding what I should and shouldn't see. There are some engaging, sensual moments in this version of the film but then the cut or the edit of the frame. Some may want the edited version but it should be stated this is that edited version. Overall, very short, several concert footage inserts and music "videos" in the extras along with production commentary. The movie uses a job in the antarctic as a framing device for his remembering all these sequences from their romance - not much talk but what there is is pillow talk. The action is in and around the bed and concert hall. Not a bad diversion but the editing annoyed. This is not for children so unless you're prudish get this elsewhere if you want to watch it.

Though yes at times I fast forwarded, I was entertained. Just to clarify with one of the last reviews on the site, the sex is actually all real. I'm a watcher of making-of-docs and they explain how the actors met and immediatly went to bed on camera. The point of the movie is the absolute non-involvement these two have, especially the woman. All they have is music, drugs and sex and that's all she wants.
