Telegraph Hill is a neighborhood in one of the hillier sections of San Francisco that over the years has become home to a large flock of wild parrots. While no one is certain how they got there, the birds were for the most part left to their own devices until they were discovered by Mark Bittner. A street musician and self-described "Dharma bum," Bittner had no practical background in ornithology when he first encountered the parrots, but it wasn't long before he developed a close bond with them and took it upon himself to feed and care for the birds, and even gave many of them names. Bittner's friendship with the parrots became a growing experience that taught the guitarist as much about himself as it did about the birds, and with the passage of time, his work earned him the respect of his community as well as a home. The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill is a documentary which recounts the story of Bittner and his birds, as well as an unexpected twist of fate which added a poignant note to their tale. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This is one of the best movies I have seen. Even if you don't particularly care for birds, you will enjoy this movie. The parrots are the stars of the show and have unique personalities. I was impressed with how the movie was edited to include "urban myths" and to show the history of parrot caretaker Mark Bittner.

I have 2 parrots, a senegal and an eclectas. They are constantly saying the funniest things. This film is wonderful, it shows how parrots are such characters. Jerry's connection to them was very special. It was also heartwarming to know he had friends who supported him help bring him to a place in his life where he can share his story. It was touching, sweet and had a happy ending.

Call me crazy but I loved this documentary. The main character(s) were supposed to be the parrots but really you get the added bonus of one incredibly compassionate and independent individual in Mark. I found his story to be just as fascinating as the parrots and found myself cheering for him as much as for the beautiful parrots of Telegraph Hill. So you get two stories for the price of one in this documentary which is wonderfully done and has such a lovely personal touch. Do rent it, you won't reget it!
