Union Square (2004)
Member Rating:
This documentary from Stephen J. Szklarski follows seven junkies through their daily routine -- get money, find heroin, buy heroin, shoot heroin, repeat as needed -- in the recently renovated Union Square neighborhood in New York City. There's the heavily pierced and tattooed Stealth, who ran away from home at 9-years-old; Cheyenne, whose visiting rights with her daughter were recently revoked; Danny, whose family has a long, sordid history of substance abuse; and Ron, who hails from the elite Madison Avenue and is still struggling to keep up appearances. Rounding out the group are Cheyenne's boyfriend Mike, who stubbornly insists that playing his guitar on the street will be his only method of getting cash, and James, who is trying to cope with the dishonesty involved in scoring drugs. As the young addicts travel from one public bathroom to another for a quick hit (some of them need up to ten a day just to avoid convulsions), their candidness and unabashed desperation reveals a deeply troubling glimpse inside the ravages of heroin and offers an equally disturbing peek into the bureaucracy of finding a rehabilitation clinic when you're young, poor, and addicted in New York. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

A gritty look into the world of the new york junkie. As bad as heroin addicts get, this movie does show a lot of shooting up. It also does very accurately let you into the lives of addicts, how they live, what they have to do, and a day to day with their lives. If your thinking about using heroin for the first time watch this. Also for the review that was first done, none of the kids had any help or parents backing them, most were panhandlers, dealers, and one man offered sex for money. Being a recovering addict I am saying, yes it is very accurate.

Well, if you want to watch person after person injecting herself or himself, this is your movie! As for me, after the third I got bored. Also, as far as delving into an addict's life, forget it! Another waste of time. They had too many addicts with injection scenes and not enough of one to gain insight into the life of an addict. Also, very unreal as all the addicts were young with good teeth and parents, family and friends backing them. Most addicts have only themselves. I was sorry I rented this and wasted my time and my money!
