Let's Get Frank (2003)

Let's Get Frank (2003)
Member Rating:
Massachusetts congressman Barney Frank achieved an uncomfortable sort of public recognition in 1990 when, three years after he came out of the closet as a gay man, he was involved in a scandal involving his use of the services of a male prostitute. Frank weathered the storm of controversy and was reelected to office, and in 1998, when President Bill Clinton was facing impeachment in the wake of a sex scandal of his own, Frank became one of the president's most outspoken champions in Washington, D.C. Let's Get Frank is a documentary on the outspoken representative, which focuses primarily on his defense of Clinton and his perspective on the so-called "culture wars" between liberal and conservative political factions. Let's Get Frank was the first feature film from director Bart Everly. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank seems like a real, funny, relatively honest (for a politician) kind of guy, and LET'S GET FRANK, the documentary made mostly, it appears, around the time of President Clinton's impeachment by our then House of Representatives, shows him up to good advantage. The film itself is all over the place: a little family & friends, a lot of political speeches & press interviews (and a surprising amount of time spent on other people--which may indicate that Frank's ego--or that of the filmmaker--is in control of itself). In any case, I'd call Frank a real gay hero and a good man, and I'm happy to have watched this pleasant, interesting but not great documentary.
