Baltic Storm (2004)

Baltic Storm (2004)
Member Rating:
In an era when at-sea disasters have grown increasingly rare thanks to "foolproof" naval technology, the September 28, 1994 wreck of the ferry boat M/S Estonia raised more than a few eyebrows. En route from Talinn to Stockholm, via the Baltic Sea, the craft capsized and 852 civilians never reached their destination. In recounting this tale cinematically, writer-director Reuben Leder (brother of Mimi "Deep Impact" Leder) adapted German reporter Jutta Rabe's conspiracy thriller about the event. The picture - like its source - suggests that classified weapons were being smuggled on board the vessel, and that Russia - after learning of this secret - deliberately torpedoed the craft. The picture recalls Costa-Gavras's Z, Alan Pakula's The Parallax View, and other conspiracy thrillers by unfurling most of its story after the fatalistic event; in the vein of those earlier films, it has a suspicious character (here Jurgen Prochnow, as accident survivor and Swedish attorney Erik Westermark) teaming up with investigative reporter Julia Reuter (Greta Scacchi) to determine the truth behind the inferred political cover-ups. Screen vet Donald Sutherland co-stars. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

The story was interesting and really makes you think about what happens in real life. However, the film had an unprofesional or unpolished look to it, and the acting was mediocer. By the end of the movie, the editing improved and the main characters were reasonably believable even if their co-stars weren't. I was disappointed that there were no special features.

If this movie ever had a chance, it was totally destroyed by the worst musical sag ways I have ever had the displeasure of hearing. And as bad as they are. they come at every cut in this film, It was child like, as it interferes with the viewer’s concentration all of the time. Most professional reviewers bombed this film, and with good reason. This half hearted effort tries to be a docudrama to give the viewer the idea that this really happened. The idea might be good, but the production fails completely and so does the movie. The movie was done in Germany, but the cast is a mix of American and European actors. The movie is spoken in English without subtitles. Another problem was that the European’s actors didn’t speak decent English. You almost wish the movie was subtitled. The movie seems unfinished and without any polish to it. Simply....This film should have been re-edited, re-record and then trashed.

A little dry, but it does move in the middle. But then it does leave you hanging!
