Regina (Fernanda Montenegro) is a retired divorcée living in Rio de Janeiro. She's estranged from her only son and his family because he's invited his father to live with him. She's devoted to her dog, Betina, and occupies her spare time as a member of the police force's special senior citizen program. Regina, operating under the code name "Snow White" spends a lot of her time looking for wrongdoers to report to the police. She spends her evenings looking out her apartment window with binoculars into the windows of her neighbors across the street. One night, she watches as an older gentleman appears to give his bedridden wife a lethal injection. She reports it to the police, but they back off when they learn that the gentleman, Carmago (Raul Cortez), is a respected member of the judiciary. Alcides (Luiz Carlos Persy), Regina's police contact, gets so much political flack that he kicks Regina out of the program. But Regina takes it upon herself to continue the investigation on her own. Carmago notices that he's been seeing her around a lot, and, thinking it's a coincidence, asks Regina out on a date. She accepts for the sake of her "investigation," but before long the two find that they are really hitting it off. The Other Side of the Street was co-written and directed by Marcos Bernstein, who co-wrote the script for Central Station, the film that earned Montenegro an Academy Award nomination. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

I learned of this film from a list of films being offered in a course for the "second half of life". It is wonderfully refreshing to see leading roles for mature actors. The themes of loneliness, illness, parenting and grandparenting, romance, life's ambiguities, and usefulness after retirement are handled with compassion but a poignancy of reality. I can identify with the characters struggles to redefine themselves as they find themselves in another chapter of life. The actors are not overly glamorized. They are graceful in their age. I applaud the writer, director, stars and all involved with this film.

This movie really had a promissing plot but it fell in the crazy sin of being predictable. The end was confusing and for me was a lot of talent of two of the great actors brazil can offer (Fernanda Montenegro and Raul Cortez (R.I.P.). Well at least have my respect for trying different plots.

I put this movie on my queue because I thought it was going to be a bit like Rear Window, which had suspense and action, etc. But spying on the neighbors is the only thing that's similar. Instead, this movie starts out in that venue and takes a complete turn in another direction. It is a bit slow in places, but as the story unfolds, the viewer gets caught up in Regina's quest to be of value to the local law enforcement team, and her gradual recognition that some things in life are not all black or white. I thought it was an intriguing, yet tender story of the challenges that senior citizens face in terms of needing to feel useful to society, facing a life of loneliness and finding love in a most unexpected manner.
