R.E.M.: Perfect Square (2003)

R.E.M.: Perfect Square (2003)
Member Rating:
R.E.M.: Perfect Square captures a concert performance recorded live at Bowling Green in Wiesbaden, Germany, July 19, 2003. It includes early classics ("The One I Love"), hit pop singles ("Losing My Religion"), rarities ("The Great Beyond"), and recent material ("Animal"). Appropriately, the show opens with "Begin the Begin" and closes with a finale of "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)." Two songs (the oldie "Maps and Legends" and the unreleased "Permanent Vacation") hadn't been performed since the '80s. The documentary "A Stirling Performance" covers the band's stay in Stirling, Scotland, during the summer tour of 1999. This disc includes interviews, performances, and behind-the-scenes footage. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

One of the best concert dvd's of all time. Beautifully shot and stunning performances. You can't help but sing along.

This concert was filmed during R.E.M's world tour to promote their "In Time" record: the best of R.E.M's Warner Brothers tenure. That is not to say that their set consists only of their most recent hits, but includes 23 songs from "Maps and Legends" right up to "Bad Day". This DVD is not just for dedicated R.E.M fans but is a quality set of their best songs (not just hits), well filmed and well directed. This film will have even those with the vaguest interest in the band saying, "I didn't know [song title] was R.E.M...!" Set list: Begin the Begin; What's the Frequency, Kenneth?; Maps and Legends; Drive; Animal; Daysleeper; The Great Beyond; Bad Day; The One I Love; All the Way to Reno; Orange Crush; Losing My Religion; At My Most Beautiful; Electrolite; She Just Wants to Be; Walk Unafraid; Man on the Moon; Everybody Hurts; So Fast, So Numb; Country Feedback; Permanent Vacation; Imitation of Life; It's the End of the World as We Know It...

Must admit that I'm not the biggest REM fan, but I did enjoy most of this disc, though I didn't recognize a lot of the songs. They had good energy and the concert was well shot.
