In the making since the director was 11-years-old and completed on a reported budget of about 200 dollars, Jonathan Caouette's Tarnation is an experimental and self-reflective mix of documentary and fiction. Bringing together a collection of home movies, family photos, answering machine messages, reenactments and Caouette's video diary, the film attempts to delve into the filmmaker's experiences growing up queer with a schizophrenic mother and dealing with her 2003 lithium overdose, which rendered her even more mentally unstable than before. After premiering at the 2003 New York Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, Tarnation screened as part of the Frontier program at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

This is an autobiographical documentary of the director's life growing up in a very disturbed family setting and the effect it has had on him. He makes this film mostly with a handheld movie camera taking snips from home movies he's been making since puberty. The effect is very disturbing, inspired, brutally honest, and, a work of deep love. I came away from this film feeling a lot of compassion for the filmmaker and reflecting on the bad hand so many of us are dealt born into less than ideal circumstances.

Just wanted to add my thoughts on Tarnation. A must-see film for anyone interested in seeing the ravages of mental illness, and how it can be passed on generation to generation. As Renee says in the film, "sick parents raise sick children." Also outstanding in its presentation--I haven't seen a film like this before, told via years' worth of film, audio, and photographs collected by the filmmaker. Touching, at times heart-wrenchingly sad, but a movie I highly recommend to anyone with a soul.
