The Action in Second Best is never predictable and always plausible. Weber creates a flawed hero, played ingeniously by Joe Pantoliano. Jennifer Tilly is great as Carol, Eliot's chance for happiness, and so is Boyd Gaines, who plays Eliot's long time best friend and competitive rival. The story is rife with tension, yet never explodes into melodramatic tripe. The rest of the lesser-known cast also brings to life memorable characters. The rantings of Eliot are insanely funny and profound at the same time. Definitely worth the watch.

There's something that makes me want to like this movie for it's originality and solid cast. But as smart and funny as it can be, it seems to fizzle away once it's all over. It's too nicely wrapped in a formulaic begginning, middle, and end, and it never makes a poignant statement about anything. It reminded me of Sidways without the hype. Still worth checking out in leu of some dreadful, major studio project.
