The debut feature from filmmaker Shane Carruth -- who wrote, directed, photographed, edited, scored, and stars -- Primer is a psychological sci-fi thriller about a group of four tech entrepreneurs. Toiling away in a garage, the quartet have successfully created error-checking systems for their clients. But their recent work seems to have created an unexpected and seemingly impossible side-effect. Suddenly, two members of the group realize they are in possession of a device that can double, or perhaps even quadruple, the space-time continuum of anything that enters it. What at first seems like a windfall of astronomical proportions eventually proves to be much more than they bargained for, as the duo attempt to manipulate time to their financial -- and emotional -- benefit. Also starring Casey Gooden, Anand Upadhyaya, and Carrie Crawford, Primer premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the coveted Grand Jury Prize for dramatic film. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

If you are a fan of mind-bending movies, time travel, or a well-made independent film, you owe it to yourself to see this movie. This is the first movie about time-travel that isn't riddled with illogical loopholes and lazy writing. In this case, complexity equals completeness. No detail is shrugged off or ignored. Be prepared to watch it at least twice. Its not just keeping track of the plot that prompts repeat viewings, its the layers of subtlety that give the film its depth and character. It's a truly rare work that rewards the viewer based on their level of participation (how close are you paying attention?) Sure, the budget was minimal, but nothing is lost that would have been found with a million dollars in hand. I'll gladly sacrifice film and sound quality for a brilliant story that sticks in my mind. This movie is bare bones in the best way possible... no fluff or glamour to distract from the genuinely unique story.

I liked this even though I had absolutely NO idea what was going on at the end. I'm not sure we are supposed to understand it. The harder I tried to figure it out, the worse it got. I actually thought about making notes to figure it out. The two guys are totally believable as the brainiacs trying to be famous. Enjoy, check it out.

The plot showed promise. The production was decent. And that's it. Very little character development. Probably wasn't the focus here. They were trying to illustrate a scientific principle and failed at that. To illustrate you need to tell the story. The dialogue was written so that you could not follow the science. The engineering jargon was off and no discussion about Einstein's work. The shorthand between the two time travelers excluded the audience from the story. Repeat screenings only help in your delusion that the script is any good. The story barely progresses in the first 20 minutes. And the "action" doesn't being until the 30 minute mark. I'd rather watch Solaris, again, in Russian, and without the subtitles. At least, I would still be able to put that story together.
