A handful of thieves discover they have more to worry about than the law in this independent horror story, set during the Civil War. William (Henry Thomas) is the leader of a group of runaway Confederate soldiers who, with the help of an escaped slave and an Army nurse, stage a daring robbery at a bank holding a cache of rebel gold. The heist does not go smoothly, and William's associates soon fall into in-fighting as they head toward Mexico with their stolen fortune. Needing a place to rest for the night, the criminals set up camp in a mansion overlooking an abandoned plantation, but it soon becomes obvious that the old house is not as empty as they thought, as a handful of angry ghosts make their presence known while William and his cohorts fight over the gold. Also featuring Isaiah Washington, Patrick Fugit, and Michael Shannon, Dead Birds was the first feature film from director Alex Turner. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I am always on the look out for new and different horror. So much of it is retreaded plots with zero suspense. This movie, set at the end of the Civil War in a gothic deserted old home develops a real feeling of creep as the evil of the prior inhabitants comes to take hold of the current visitors, a group of bank robbers. It is, sort of, a "Just Desserts" type movie, as the bank robbers have all just committed murder and are proper subjects of damnation anyway. The house helps along. Only one criticism: It is not really clear how or why they pick the house as a hide-out. That one hanging thread was unsatisfying. Otherwise, I give this movie a high 98% on the creep-o-meter.

When you put your characters into a strange time line, what might be considered same old same old, now becomes brand new and refreshing movie. A group of people find themselves in a strange house, and stranger things begin to happen. But this old horror theme takes place during the Civil War, and business as usual doesn’t feel usual at all. The cast works well together, and Sam, characterized by Patrick Fugit from “Almost Famous” adds volumes to this cast. This movie could set the tone for an entirely new way of delivering horror movies, as “Outland” did for Sci-fi films. The idea has been tryed before. but this one works, were the other failed

This one was slow but it was all right. It could have been really good. Unfortunately it wasn't.
