This Hong Kong film is inspired by two of Frank Capra's films: the 1933 classic Lady for a Day, and Capra's own 1961 remake, Pocketful of Miracles. Directed by Jackie Chan, Chan also stars as Dragon, an up-and-coming gangster in 1930s Hong Kong who rises through the mob ranks by a series of lucky coincidences. Chan attributes his good luck to an old woman, a street vendor who he believes sells lucky roses. When the woman's wealthy daughter comes to visit, Dragon is determined to help the woman impress her daughter. This film was a labor of love for Chan, and his regular collaborators, Bill Tung, Sammo Hung, Anita Mui, and Yuen Biao also make appearances. Although there are bits of action throughout, this sentimental film emphasizes its warm-hearted characters. ~ Jonathan E. Laxamana, Rovi

Lots of wonderful stunts and fights as you would expect from a Jackie Chan flick, but there's a lot more going on in Black Dragon. There's an opportunity to see some priceless physical comedy from the lovely Anita Mui, Hong Kong's answer to Lucille Ball. The story sustains interest for the full running time. The technical credits, such as editing, direction, costume design, and art direction are all first-rate. Highest recommendation for fans of HK cinema.

The DVD was also released under the name Miracles and that version is in Cantonese/Mandarin w subtitles which is the only way, short of speaking the language, to watch the movie. This version is dubbed and I believe a Dimension studio which does not subtitle. They dub. Badly. But the action is still great.

I waited for months to finally get this movie, and I made it through about the first 15 minutes. I adore Chan but somehow this frenetic and poorly acted (though well intentioned) flick just doesn't cut it. The words fly fast and furious -- which is fine if you understand the language but very difficult if you have to read the subtitles as you go. Plus, it looks dubbed! I find that very disconcerting. I'm an avid foreign language film buff but this one just doesn't lend itself to subtitles.
