Celebrated writer and director John Sayles turns his eye to politics in America in this drama. The son of respected Colorado politician Senator Jud Pilager (Michael Murphy), Dicky Pilager (Chris Cooper) is a charming but half-bright man with a bad habit of mangling the English language and a decided lack of political correctness. Dicky is also in the midst of a hard-fought campaign to become governor of Colorado. Dicky's campaign manager, Chuck Raven (Richard Dreyfuss), is a ruthless sort who will leave no stone unturned to see that his candidate wins, so when Dicky snags a dead body while fishing during the shooting of a campaign commercial, Raven is determined to find out if his man has been set up. Raven hires Danny O'Brien (Danny Huston), a former journalist turned private investigator, to find out who the dead man is and if he might be connected to Pilager's enemies. But the deeper O'Brien digs into the matter, the more he finds out about the candidate and his family -- and very little of it is flattering. John Sayles assembled a typically impressive cast for Silver City, with the supporting cast highlighted by Tim Roth, Kris Kristofferson, Maria Bello, Thora Birch, Daryl Hannah, Billy Zane, and Mary Kay Place. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

After taking 2 hours to build a case on all the corruption, the movie just stops. We deserve a better ending after sitting through two hours of this movie. An ending is suggested, and hoped for, but doesn't materialize.

The reason I rented this movie was that there were quite a few actors and actresses in the movie that have had previous success in the movies. Like how bad could it be? It was BAD. Well, I can't imagine that this movie made a dime in the theaters, and the only reason it would make money was unsuspecting people such as myself watched it for the same reason I did. And if this movie made any money, it went to pay all of the staring actors and actresses who star in it. This movie was sooooo boring, and so slow. I was waiting for SOMETHING to happen. And when anything happened it was so lame. If you have sleeping disorders or if you feel like taking a nap rent this one. Just don't waste your time with this one.

This movie is terrible! I read that this was a modernized version of the 1974 film Chinatown, and despite all its horrible reviews I still wanted to see it. It’s like John Sayles couldn’t decide if this should be a dark, film noir thriller (which it is not) or a comedic spoof of George W. Bush (which it is not.) So instead it becomes more of a ScoobyDoo episode, predictable and childish. There are too many characters and you don’t care about any of them. There are, however, four people you wish would be fired for making this abomination: the director, the screenwriter, and the casting director. And poor Danny Huston, who is a great actor, but my goodness. I think he only did this film as a tribute to his father who starred in the original. He should be fired out of sheer mercy.
