Motorama (1991)

Motorama (1991)
Member Rating:
This allegorical comedy from scriptwriter Joe Minion (After Hours, Vampire's Kiss) offers a unique twist on the standard road movie formula. It tells the story of a young boy named Gus who grows sick and tired of parental squabbles and decides to steal his dad's red Mustang and hit the highway on a cross-country journey. The country presented in this film, however, is not the U.S., but a fictional land with states such as Bergen and Essex - a land with parallels to a giant board game. While on the road, Gus spots a billboard inviting him to play the "Motorama" game, a promotional effort by a major gas station that promises winners $500 million dollars. In order to win, one simply has to collect enough game cards from Chimera gas stations all over the country to spell out the word "Motorama." As Gus approaches his goal of collecting all eight letters, he has assorted adventures, many of them strange and a few that are distinctly unpleasant. The film features cameos from several notable cult favorites, including character players Jack Nance and Dick Miller, actress Drew Barrymore, and even the pop singer Meat Loaf. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

I saw this movie years ago at a really late hour, like 2:00 AM, and it really stuck. The colorful characters and insanely surreal plot really put this film in it's own category. I love films with grown-up kids and child-like adults, and this one has both. I also love the bad-to-worse circumstances surrounding the main character, Gus. And, somehow, he has blind hope of a child, as well as a great deal of persistence. This kid's tough and so is this movie. I recommend it to anyone with an open mind and an imaginative sense of fun.

A strange little film that doesn't really work. Like most road pictures, this becomes too episodic at times. There are breaches of logic, as when the boy takes to the open road, and one stranger takes no notice that a child is driving a car, and the next stranger notices this immediately. Odd and pointless cameos by such music celebrities as Flea, Meat Loaf, & VJ Martha Quinn makes you think this film was funded by MTV. The "Motorama" card game is intriguing, but the end result a little disappointing. All in all, a fascinating experiment that ultimately fails.

this movie is billed as a strange comedy. Well, they got it half right. Yes, I find it strange that every adult in the movie is a fool, or worse. But is that funny?
