Journalist Ivy Meeropol makes her directorial debut with Heir to an Execution, a personal documentary exploring the execution of her biological grandparents: Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. In 1953, the Rosenbergs were put to death by the U.S. government with the charge of conspiracy to commit wartime espionage. Their orphaned young children were adopted by the Meeropol family, who raised them with the belief that their real parents were innocent. After working as a magazine reporter and political speechwriter for much of her career, director Meeropol conducted her own intimate investigation of her grandparents. The film includes commentary from the Rosenbergs' friend Morton Sobell (also convicted, but released from prison in 1969) and the director's father, Michael Meeropol. Produced by filmmaker Marc Levin, Heir to an Execution was shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004 as part of the documentary competition. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

After more than 50 years, can we simply accept that these 2 were simply traitors? They were paid soviet spys. They were guilty. I guess there's always someone ready to make a PBeSque documentary whining about "...for a crime they didn't commit" I am sure no one would like to someday know that their grandparents were traitors and sold nuclear secrets to the Russians. The Rosenburg's did. And now, 50+ years later, something called the Venona project has proved this on top of the moutain of conclusive evidence that has been right here all along. I guess it will never be enough for some people to simply admit it. Hey, Russian premier Nikita Krushev said it himself "they were heroes of the soviet state" What more do you want?

I can't say I liked or disliked this documentary. Its definitely interesting. Even mind blowing. I don't know that I would tell the world I was a relative though. Makes me wonder whats in my own history.

Very interesting look at a horrendous period in American history from the point of view of the second generation (granddaughter) so it was highly personal. The production values were not very high so don't expect a Ken Burns look but it's heartfelt and ultimately very moving. I learned a lot about the subject which I became interested in after seeing Angels in America which featured the ghost of Ethel Rosenberg paying a visit to the dying Roy Cohn.
