I have just gotten disc 5 of the first season, and I love the episodes that I have seen. I really liked watching the episode called : "In The Hands Of The Prophets," which is about religion and the state. "Duet" provides a wonderful scene for Nana Visitor's Kira Nerys. Kira is one of my favorite characters because of her convictions and devotion to her friends and her people. I had forgotten how much I hated Vedek (later Kai) Winn, but when I watched how she made the parents of Keiko's school children turn, I really felt bad for Keiko. Watching the episodes reminded me of when I saw the episodes with my parents as a young child.

DS9 eventually became the darkest series of the Star Trek franchise, and rightly so stands on its own as a good show. BUT, season one is a bit weak. Too many "ship shows" where all we do is learn the characters and the layout of the station. Not sure if DS9 had a budget that first season; sure doesn't look like it. But remember, season one of Next Generation was the weakest season, too. So if you really want to get to know the characters, watch season 1; otherwise, skip to the second year.
