Oklahoma! (1999)
Member Rating:
Before hitting it big stateside in 2000's X-Men, Hugh Jackman impressed London audiences with his performance as Curly in director Trevor Nunn's wildly successful revival of Oklahoma!, a live performance of which was captured for this television and video broadcast. Shot at the Royal National Theater, the performance tells the time-tested tale of Laurey (Josefina Gabrielle) and her struggles to resist the advances of the brutish Jud (Shuler Hensley) in favor of the gentle Curly (Jackman). All of the musical's much-loved tunes are here, including "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," "Surrey With the Fringe on Top," and the title song. Oklahoma! was broadcast on PBS in November 2003, coinciding with its U.S. video release. ~ Michael Hastings, Rovi

I watched this movie after hearing that Hugh Jackman had to turn down the role as the Phantom in "The Phantom of the Opera"(2004). I loved the original "Oklahoma" movie, and was hoping that this one would be able to do the original justice (so many remakes are disappointing). I was blown away. Not only does Hugh Jackman have an amazing voice, he and his co-cast do a wonderful job portraying their characters. The singing, dancing, and acting were all flawless. It is filmed onstage, but it is easy to forget until you hear the applause or see the audience. I would recommend this movie to anyone.

I fell in love w/ the Shirley Jones Oklahoma as a kid and saw this one a few years ago on PBS and loved it. Hugh Jackman is a great Curly and the stage direction and cast is more vibrant and interesting then the classic, also the dance sequence are better.

Everyone in this cast can sing, dance and act to the highest caliber! I "feared" the play would be old fashioned and dated, but it has timeless themes and universal appeal. Hugh Jackman is unparallelled!
