Cambridge Spies (2003)

Cambridge Spies (2003)
Member Rating:
Harold "Kim" Philby, Anthony Blunt, Guy Burgess, and Donald Maclean were four bright, intelligent, and ambitious young men who attended Cambridge University in the early '30s. They all seemed to have promising futures ahead of them and, indeed, all four distinguished themselves in their careers. Burgess and Maclean became respected diplomats, Philby rose to be a senior officer in British intelligence, and Blunt was a well-known art historian. But the four men shared a secret -- certain that Great Britain would fall during the Second World War, and equally convinced that Russia held the world's best and only hope of defeating the Nazi juggernaut, the students became secret agents for the KGB, the Soviet Union's intelligence force, and the former schoolmates worked together as agents for the U.S.S.R. well into the height of the Cold War -- until they were discovered in 1963. Cambridge Spies is a made-for-TV drama produced by the BBC which dramatizes the true story of these unlikely secret agents, exploring how they worked together, and what finally brought their secret lives into the spotlight. It stars Samuel West as Blunt, Toby Stephens as Philby, Tom Hollander as Burgess, and Rupert Penry-Jones as Maclean. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This is a well done telemovie. A really fine production with lush locations, beautiful scenery with superb acting. You really do feel the pain of the actions/consequences of these clever but somewhat naive spies. All 4 principal actors ,Sam West,Tom Hollander & Rupert Penry-jones do a great job. Toby Stephens gives an incredible performance as Philby. After watching all 4 eps, I selected the optional directors commentary for their behind -the-scenes stories. Good extras- History channel doc, and some archival UK news videos. It was annoying that both discs dont ship together, but worthy of a re-rent to get both so you can watch the whole story.

This is the Disc 2 of the set and if you don't get both at once you get rather lost in the whole scenario. This also has story part 4 on it.

Cambridge Spies is a four part BBC mini series. There are 3 parts on Disc 1 and the final part plus special features on Disc 2. It is not a spy story. Do not expect anything like The Company or Breach. The film is historically inaccurate. It is loosely based on the activities of several Cambridge students who became communists in the 1930's. There have been many novels and movies about these four men and several other British men accused of spying for the Soviet Union. This presentation is one of the poorer ones. It focuses on their drinking, womanizing and homosexuality. It was not entertaining which is what I look for in a movie.
