The Undertow (2003)
Member Rating:
A relaxing vacation down a calm river turns into a bloody battle for survival when six friends enter an old town with a deadly secret. Upon first glance, the small town of Old Mines looks just like any other backwoods speck on the map: Lots of open fields, a few ramshackle barns dotting the landscape, and lots of locals who aren't too keen on talking with strangers. But when six longtime friends arrive in Old Springs for a weekend of floating down the lazy river, the local police advise the easygoing vacationers to leave while they still can. Chalking the warning up to little more than small-town xenophobia, the vacationers take to the water just as some nasty secrets about Old Springs begin to surface. Specifically, stories about a deformed, seven foot-tall homicidal maniac whose sole purpose in life is to rid Old Springs of strangers in the most violent manner his mangled mind can dream up. As the mayor releases the psychotic killer known only as "The Boy," the gruesome hunt begins. But where did "The Boy" come from, and how was he transformed into such a murderous brute? ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

For an extremely low budget movie, this flick was pretty good. The sound is shoddy in spots (a boom Mic could have been the answer)and the night (dark) scenes appear a little grainy. The acting wasn't terrible(not saying it's good either), but the actors themselves were pretty ugly. There's some effects that made no sense to me during dialog, like when Billy visit's the campers and tells them of what's going on in the town. During her story they kept cutting to the campfire with an annoying high pitched noise. I'm not sure what they were trying to achieve with this. However, I like the story, as it has that classic early 80's babes in the woods getting stalked by maniac that has an obvious deformity type of plot. The killer is very reminiscent of Jason in Friday the 13th Part 2. It's kind of like a Jason and Leatherface character mixed together. There's plenty of gore in this one too.

I don't know who to blame for wasting my time here, yet another low budget movie from a bunch a people who think "it'd really be cool to make a horror movie" or Blockbuster for carrying this trash. This is just a group of friends who drink a lot of beer and try to make a movie. It's just plain terrible. Acting, script, camerawork, etc. Don't waste your time with this unless you're sharing a cell with Charles Manson and have to have something to keep you occupied.
