Director Tim Burton brings his unique vision and sensibility to Roald Dahl's classic children's story in this lavish screen interpretation. Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp) is the secretive and wildly imaginative man behind the world's most celebrated candy company, and while the Wonka factory is famously closed to visitors, the reclusive candy man decides to give five lucky children a chance to see the inside of his operation by placing "golden tickets" in five randomly selected chocolate bars. Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore), whose poor but loving family lives literally in the shadow of the Wonka factory, is lucky enough to obtain one of the tickets, and Charlie, escorted by his Grandpa Joe (David Kelly), is in for the ride of a lifetime as he tours the strange and remarkable world of Wonka with fellow winners, media-obsessed Mike Teavee (Jordan Fry), harsh and greedy Veruca Salt (Julia Winter), gluttonous Augustus Gloop (Philip Wiegratz), and ultra-competitive Violet Beauregarde (AnnaSophia Robb). Over the course of the day, some of the children will learn difficult lessons about themselves, and one will go on to become Wonka's new right hand. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory also stars Christopher Lee, James Fox, and Noah Taylor; the book was famously adapted to the screen before in 1971 under the title Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, with Gene Wilder as the eccentric candy tycoon. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I like JD n TB... but geez was this a terrible film... It had NO heart.. After watching the original WillyWonka with G Wilder, I can't believe they chose TB to make this film.. The original film was all about right/wrong.. life lessons kids should learn.. and rewarding the good kids for good behavior. A lesson missed by far in the remake... Aram S

This was a good movie. They got rid of some of the singing. There are only 5 songs in this movie. Tim Burton always does a good job when he makes a movie. He made Willy Wonka a darker character. Johnny Depp, one of my favorite actors. His portrayal of Willy Wonka was a good one. He made me laugh in new ways. The older one, I liked that one too. Gene Wilder is a funny man. I respect him very much. This is one of the few remakes I actually enjoyed watching.

Unlike "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (made earlier), this movie is not a musical. There is more plot in this version and it is darker/creepier. Even Charlie Bucket's house is slanted, but what do you expect from a Tim Burton directed movie? Tim Burton happens to be my favorite director, so I love this movie, I just think that "Wiily Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" is superior to "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." This version does tell more, like I previously said, so if you want more plot, rent this version. If you quick and to the point, rent "Willy Wonk and the Chocolate Factory." There is singing in this movie (like from the Oompa-Loompas) and the plot is basically the same: 5 children win their way into a chocolate factory with a grand prize waiting for just one of them. Ultimately, however, at the end of the film, someone gets a really big grand prize, so watch for that. Both versions are great in my opinion for family films, but I just think Gene Wilder is better.
