French filmmaker Alexandre Aja writes and directs the slasher film Haute Tension, given the English title Switchblade Romance. Best friends Marie (Cécile De France) and Alex (Maïwenn Le Besco) go out to the countryside to visit Alex's parents. However, a homicidal delivery man (played by Philippe Nahon from Gaspar Noé's brutal movies) ends up at their house and starts killing everyone. Alex and Marie fight for their lives with help from several means of weaponry. Switchblade Romance was shown at the 2003 Toronto Film Festival as part of the Midnight program. The film was aquired by US distributor Lions Gate Films in 2004 and quickly put into turnaround as an NC-17 release, though plans for that were scrapped due to a lack of theater support of the controversial rating. Retitled High Tension, the R-rated version is missing one minute of grisly gore and features a redubbed audio track by star Cécile De France. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

This movie is very suspenseful. You're on the edge of your seat until the very end. The twist at the end leaves a few questions but if you're a deep / analytical thinker you can draw your own conclusions. The movie is reminiscent of Dean Koontz's novel "Intensity" which is actually even more intense than this film (as the title suggests). And the same is true of this title; by the end you will find yourself tense and uneasy. I gave it 3 stars instead of 4 because the voice-overs are poorly done and the plot has been done before, but the surprise ending and the suspense make this movie worth watching.

Yeah, there were a few good horror/gore sequences but overall it left me wanting. I really hoped to understand just how the hell this all went down given the twist ending. I'm not sure the writer/director could even explain it. the film could have been done differently to make the ending make sense (somehow). At any rate, if your a violence/gore fan, check it out. If you want a good story that makes sense, pass it by.

Skip this one. Pick up Martyrs instead. Martyrs is the real French horror.
