Young wizard-in-training Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) returns to Hogwarts for his fifth year of studies, only to find that the magical community seems to be in a curious state of denial about his recent encounter with the sinister Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) in the fifth installment of the popular fantasy film series based on the best-selling books by author J.K. Rowling. Rumor has it that the dreaded Lord Voldemort has returned, but Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge (Robert Hardy) isn't so sure what to make of all the hearsay currently floating around the campus of Hogwarts. Suspecting that Headmaster Albus Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) may be fueling the rumors regarding Voldemort's return in order to undermine his authority and lay claim to his job, Fudge entrusts newly arrived Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton) with the task of tracking Dumbledore and keeping a protective watch over the nervous student body.     I enjoyed the movie - though not as much as the first 4 - but my kids were bored, except my 9 year old. If your kids don't LOVE Harry Potter, they won't sit still in this one.

    I feel sorry for anyone who tries to watch this movie without having read the book first. They cut so much of the book out that the casual watcher probably wouldn't be able to follow the movie very well. This could really be said about all the Harry Potter movies except the first one. I watched the first three before I read the books and I did a lot head scratching because of it. But if you have read the books, then the movies do serve as a good visual companion to the series.

    I have not read any but the first in the series of books these movies are based on. I have enjoyed the other movies I have seen in this series more than this one. The atmosphere at Hogwarts is depressing, Dumbledore's avoidance of Harry inscrutable until the very end and the Umbridge character's cruelty leaves one awash in revulsion to the point that it overshadows the entertainment value. I wouldn't recommend this to those who haven't read the book. "The Goblet of Fire" and other installments were more enjoyable. A "C" is the highest rating I can give this.
