Member Rating:
A boy from a broken home finds a friend in an insular, spiritual shopkeeper in this period drama from writer/director François Dupeyron. Set in 1960s Paris, Monsieur Ibrahim et les Fleurs du Coran revolves around Momo (Pierre Boulanger), a young man who lives alone with his father in the bustling Rue Bleu district. Still smarting over the separation from his wife and other son, Momo's dad neglects his son in ways both minor and major, to the point where the teen spends most of his time out of school alone and isolated. He finds an unlikely ally in Monsieur Ibrahim (Omar Sharif), a Muslim shopkeeper who spends most of his days behind the counter of his store reading the Koran. As time passes, Momo and Ibrahim begin to bring each other out of his respective shell, sharing a series of everyday adventures, culminating in Momo's indoctrination into Ibrahim's faith. Monsieur Ibrahim et les Fleurs du Coran played the Toronto and Venice film festivals; at the latter, Sharif was given a lifetime achievement award for this and the rest of his career's work. ~ Michael Hastings, Rovi

I spend 30 % of my year in France..and had heard from mes amis (my friends) that I'd probably enjoy this movie. They were correct. The 1960's portrayed bought back 'memories' of my teenage years..in Philadelphia..and the kid wanted to be "THE MAN!' Definitely not the section of Paris I usually visit..but I enjoyed the 'aura of another era'..and the neighborhood contained an assortment of some real 'shady characters.' Both stars were quite good..and while portions of the 'plot' were at times 'not believeable'..I believe this to be an easy film to follow both visually..and through the sub-titles. Porquoi pas? (Why not?) See it..Omar Sharif has come a long way since 'Funny Girl'..and his mastery of languages (English and French) is nice.

Parts of Paris and Turkey one rarely sees (on screen or as a tourist)...magnificent acting...poignant story...pertinent issues/questions dealt with (both personal and global) throughout the ages...funny and sad and amusing and touching...the part Omar Sharif was born to play...a film I'm going to buy for my collection...I could babble on, but stop listening to me and just see this movie.

I'm a bit perturbed by the negative ratings having to do with the so-called 'anti-jewish' message in the movie. While I could certainly see where one could see that if they wanted to, I thought the point was more that a Jewish kid and a Muslim man could have a friendship where it didn't matter. Either way, it seems odd to admit that the movie is good but then rate it low because of the message... Anyway, as to the movie itself, it's a gorgeous, wonderful movie, at first you might be a little put off by the boy and the prostitute but it's not too bad and the rest of the movie is great, towards the end it seems a little um, 'incoherent' or not quite focused but otherwise I enjoyed the movie very much. Highly recommended.
