Synopsis of How to Create a Rumba

Writer/director/producer Ivan Acosta helms the original documentary How to Create a Rumba (Como se Forma una Rumba). This 73-minute film cuts between insightful, occasionally humorous interviews with musicians who discuss the relevance of the rumba dance to Cuban culture and society, and Afro-Cuban "jam sessions" that bring the sound to sizzling life. The film boasts an all-star lineup of over 20 rumba luminaries, including Juan Pablo Torres, Israel Kantor, Carlos y Marta, Armando Lopez, Art Farmer, and Raices Habaneras. This is an excellent companion piece to Acosta's Grammy-nominated Fifty Years of Mambo. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
