My Life On Ice (2003)
Member Rating:
The third film collaboration from co-directors Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau, The True Story of My Life in Rouen tells the tale of a young French teen's struggle to come to terms with his emotional and physical development during puberty. When young Etienne (Jimmy Tavares) turned 16, his grandmother (Helene Surgere) gave him a video recorder. The new toy turns into an obsession for Etienne as he sets out to film nearly every aspect of his life, as well as some of his friends' and family's lives -- much to the ire of his mother, Caroline (Ariane Ascaride). In the process, however, Etienne begins to emotionally distance himself from everyone around him. As his loved ones begin to find Etienne's filming intrusive, Etienne also discovers that the camera is not merely a passive observer, but holds a great amount of influence on the actions of those being taped. As Etienne continues to film his friends and family, Etienne's coming-of-age becomes the true subject of his films, which also have begun to inversely influence his developing maturity. The True Story of My Life in Rouen was an official selection at the 2002 Locarno International Film Festival. ~ Ryan Shriver, Rovi

This movie was shot very a la Blair Witch Project, with a video camera. It definately gives it a unique feel and gives us Ettiene's perspective. Some of the actors were not right for the movie since for this type of movie people that would be natural would be essential to sell the idea of a home-made video. They were good actors but i was constantly aware they were acting. The sexual tension between Etienne and his teacher was probably the most interesting and appealing thing of the film. Although the movie's plot was suprisingly intriguing, it ends with the feeling that a lot of the conflicts i've spend an hour and a half watching are not resolved.

From what I saw and to be quite frank I stopped watching as the film did not focus on the topic that was the focus, ice skating. There were so many other angles that were unnecessary that the film was not a film. It was just a collection of videos that you would expect to see in someone's family collection. Ice skating requires a lot of practice and dedication. This film did nothing to show that.

I think that there should have been more "ice" and less of the "life". The story revolved too much around the filming, which would have been fine if it would not have continually showed the actors just sitting or walking with no meaningful dialect. I thought that Etienne would have formed a relationship with either his best friend or at least the skater her practived with. The ending was rather boring as the movie kept building up to something that really ended up being nothing but a camera shot of Etienne covered up in bed being filmed by the guy he met on the ridge overlooking the beach. Only one question about whether or not it was possible to love a boy and the best friend stormed off and everything fade to the ridge scene and the weak ending. Beautiful guys and potential for an excellent movie......but it did not make it....
