Better-than-average sci-fi/thrillers are not so easy to come by these days, so stick CYPHER on your list. Jeremy Northam turns in another first-class performance of the kind that will keep him relegated to non-star status, but for those of us who appreciate this kind of work, he's tops. Lucy Liu fills her cute-and-surface role adequately and looks great, as usual. The question of what is going on is the most interesting thing about this film (as it often is in this sort of sci-fi puzzle); once the cat's out of the bag, things do sag a bit. But the cat stays bagged longer than usual, and even the last half-hour offers some suspenseful chases and an OK twist or two. Directed by Vincenzo Natali ("Cube"), this is one of the many films that Miramax picked up and then declined to release theatrically. Too bad; "Cypher" deserves better than that.

Decent rental, but don't watch for the sci-fi aspect. The industrial espionage plot could very well be set in today's world. The intrigue twists and turns were quite surprising. All in all a decent movie
