Member Rating:
The return of a vengeful ex-girlfriend sets into motion a series of gruesome events for a hapless Irish bachelor in director Robert Quinn's grim black comedy. Tommy (Andrew Scott) had thought he had seen the last of Jean (Katy Davis) after their recent breakup, but when Jean returns to stake her claim on Tommy's apartment, the confrontation that ensues makes their previous quarrels look petty by comparison. After leaving the apartment in the head of the fight to cool his head and gather his thoughts, Tommy returns to the apartment only to find that Jean has died sometime in the course of the last few hours. Now faced with the prospect of being a murder suspect, Tommy enlists the aid of his friend Noel (Darren Healy) in ditching the body and ensuring that no one ever finds out what happened. Getting rid of Jean once and for all isn't going to be as simple as it sounds, though, and by the end of this long black night both Tommy's lies and the deceptions of others will return with a vengeance to throw a sizeable wrench in his perfect plan. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Long on plot & even longer on coincidence, DEAD BODIES takes a few interesting twists, then a few more, topped with several others & finally--that's right--overdoses completely, leaving the viewer never bored but never convinced. Seemingly bent on showing us how "dark" we all are, this strange movie--made, I believe, for Irish television--succeeds mostly in showing us that its writer Derek Landy & director Robert Quinn want us to believe how dark we all are. The film was nominated for seven--count 'em--IFTAs (Ireland's films and television awards) & actually won three of these. On the basis of this, I think it best to imagine that each year Ireland makes few films for theatrical or TV distribution. Very few. If you're a mystery addict, you'll add this to your list; otherwise, it barely squeaks into the realm of the average. Kelly Reilly ("Mrs. Henderson Presents," "L'Auberge Espagnole," "Russian Dolls") does her usual top job, & the rest of the cast is as convincing as the plot allows.

There are so many super low budget stinkers that its a relief to see any suspense, horror film thats even watchable. This flick is marginal though. For one thing its an Irish film and has that BBC TV drama kind of look. Its fairly slow though the plot twists start coming quickly. The other problem is that it takes one interesting twist in the beginning and then keeps adding more and more ridiculous plots twists to rise about the usual banal crime drama. Unfortunately the twists after the first get absurd and unbelievable. Interesting effort , but it doesnt quite cut it.
