Goldfish Memory (2003)
Member Rating:
Written and directed by Liz Gill, Goldfish Memory chronicles the ups and downs of several Irish singles who, like goldfish, seem to have a memory span that's simply too short to prevent them from repeating the same actions ad nauseam. Lives intertwine when a middle-aged professor (Sean Campion) with a nasty tendency to chase after his pupils breaks up with one of his conquests (Fiona Glascott) in order to repeat the pattern with another student (Fiona O'Shaughnessy). Shunned, Clara (Glascott) goes on to have a lesbian affair with a local reporter (Flora Montgomery), who turns out to be more than a little possessive. In an effort to get away from the needy reporter, Clara manages to attract the woman who had stolen the affections of her professor in the first place. Goldfish Memory was filmed entirely in Dublin, Ireland, and also features Keith McErlean, Peter Gaynor, and Jean Butler. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

Dublin probably has never looked so good, full of light and space, and is here an engaging stage for the Irish cast playing assorted lesbian, gay and straight characters in search of relationships lasting more than the moment. The sex is mostly soft core, the people good-looking, and the story's p.o.v. equally accepting of the character's various lifestyles. The comedy is light and all ends well for each of the characters. Compare and contrast with April's Shower and Imagine Me & You.

I found this movie to be a delightful romantic comedy with a serious side. Set in Dublin, there is also a solid backing soundtrack (Damien Rice and all). The only song I didn't care for was the closer underlying the credits. There is a good deal of experimentation (sexually) in this university atmosphere. But this is asso a good measure of learning, at least for some of the central characters, when results of repeated behaviour do not measure up to hopes and expectations.

Thought this was a great, fun little film. It was light and interesting although a bit slow at the beginnging. Was glad to see a good film exploring all different types of relationships.
