This one is difficult to rate. Not a 5 star movie but certainly not one star either. I split down the middle as there is both very interesting and at same time very unusual scenes. Performances are not consistant but in a strange way, I both liked & disliked this film.

This is a movie that you have to pay close attention to. It is hard to tell if the detective is the made up character or if the crippled guy is. You discover the reason he is in the condition he is in towards the end. You realize that he is writing on personal experience early on. I think Mel Gibson's part, which I was unaware was even him for some time, is essential in helping this man to heal. Pay attention to detail and understand what is really happening and you will like this movie. I wish the sex scenes had not been so explicit, but it does help show why he has aggression towards women. Every part of him is affected by what he has been through. It is just more of the detail. The death of Mr. Binny was just the beginning of Dark's healing. He began to come to grips with things. I think this was a very well thought out movie. It is just deep! You have to be in the mood for a deep movie to watch it. I give it three stars because of the acting and the depth of the movie.

Excellent depiction of 'storybook' and reality. Robert Downing, Jr. is very entertaining as an invalid and a singing detective. Great music!!
