Campbell Scott directed this offbeat comedy drama about a free-thinking family who find themselves confronted by the more regimented outside world. Bo Groden (Valentina d'Angelis) is an 11-year-old girl growing up as part of a decidedly eccentric family in a small town in New Mexico. Bo's father, Charley (Sam Elliott), has fallen into a deep depression for reasons no one can understand, while her mother, Arlene (Joan Allen), holds the household together, raising most of their food in her vegetable garden, which she prefers to tend in the nude. Bo, meanwhile, satisfies her sweet tooth by writing candy companies claiming to have had problems with their products, which usually results in a box of fresh goodies. While the Grodens get by through living within simple means, one day an Internal Revenue Agent appears at their door, wanting to know why the family hasn't paid income tax for several years -- and not believing there has been no appreciable income for so many years. Off the Map was screened in competition at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This movie is a real sleeper and very good. It is a movie about true love and relationships among people who are truely interested in one another. It takes a little while to grow on you but stick with and get into it and you won't be disappointed.

Little Valentina D'Angelis is superb in this movie ! She is the heart and soul of this offbeat flick, that unfortunately has Sam Eliott playing a very depressed father for most of the movie - - which is really hard to watch and stomach, if you're a huge Sam Eliott fan like I am, who historically plays more of the macho, all-Western sort of acting rolls. Joan Allen is wonderful in this movie - and really does a fine job as a supportive yet frustrated wife of Eliott's. But the Oscar definitely goes to Valentina - who's light-hearted, optomistic and artistic take on "Life-101" drives this movie throughout - and she is SUCH a cutie ! Slow - but meant to be this way. After all, what on earth in New Mexico ever gets too action, excited and adventurous ?

An interesting yet very subtle and slow moving story about a family in Northern New Mexico in the early 70s. The father played so wonderfully by Sam Elliott is suffering from depression bringing anxiety into his little household found way "off the map". His wife (Joan Allen) and 12 yr old daughter and his best friend are all at a loss as to how to bring him round again. An IRS man comes to collect 7 yrs of back taxes one day and never returns. This is a gentle tale and examination of life and how we should each live it in a way that suits us best.
