Or for those of you who are starting out. This is a film that will show you the Japanese culture without the head-reeling culture shock that some films are famous for. These women are not Geisha, keep that in mind. They paint themselves because it is a fashion and not a status symbol. They are very human and quite real. The reaction to some situations may be a head scratcher but those who have a hard time understanding may want to rent Shogun, well that is if you have 6 hours of your life to kill. ;) All in all the photograpy and acting is wonderful and the only negative I have to say is the long pauses and lenghty repetitive sequences that is common with Japanese drama. Good rent not for children under 16.

I was pleasantly surprised to emjoy a movie that is basically about prostitution. You really root for the geisha with the heart of gold. I woudl have liked them to expand the secondary "missus", the olde of the two main lead femailes. She was wuite beautiful and I hate not knowing if she was rescued. Overall, I enjoyed it. Uncomplicated and easy to follow the story line.

Very engaging. A very well crafted Japanese movie. This shows the masterful hand of Kurosawa. Take the time to see the featurette, which talks about the production.
